Episode Show Notes:
Health grade sanitation is a step up from what you may have learned at the state level or beauty school.
- Anything over 70% alcohol is drying too fast and is not productive
- 70% Alcohol is great but it does not kill staph, pink eye, MRSA, you need a hospital grade disinfectant, such as Lucicide, that kills bacteria, virus, etc
- Autoclaves are a great addition and now come in smaller forms
- Use hospital grade disinfectant to wipe down your station/setup area before you set up and btwn every client
- Any tools that come in contact with mucus membranes (eyes, nose, month) need to be cleaned with hospital grade disinfectant
Are you doing everything you can to protect clients with a compromised immune system?
How to Effectively Clean your Makeup Brushes
- CLEAN (by removing debris and all the extra makeup first)
- SANITIZE (with brush cleaner or 70% alcohol)
- DISINFECT with hospital grade disinfectant
- The powder brushes and bigger fluff brushes only need to be cleaned and sanitized. You can skip disinfecting
- All brushes that come in contact with mucus membranes need to be disinfected. Depending on the solution, these brushes need to soak for up to 10 mins so it may be helpful to have multiples of these brushes
- All Sponges are disposable, beauty blenders May or may not be able to be disinfected via microwave or audio leave (check out the live on sanitation conversation for more)
How to clean, sanitize and disinfect pencil liners:
- Use a Metal sharpener to withstand the hospital grade disinfectant
- Soak the sharpener as per your disinfectant
- sharpen your pencil
- Soak the sharpener again to clean the sharpener
How to keep your kit clean:
Wipe down everything before putting it back into your kit and check for expiration dates. You want to keep your kit cool, avoid heat to prevent bacteria growth and quick shocks from hot to cold.
Other great tips:
- Have separate containers for clean brushes and dirty brushes to avoid cross contamination
- Cut off applicators in your kit so you’re not tempted to use them
- If you love to work off the back of your hand like I do, medical tape and IV bandages are great barriers! Put a thin layer of cream on your hand first to prevent the skin from becoming irritated with prolonged use.
It’s a lot but everything has steps, choose one thing, make it a routine and then add another step <3
